Pixel bicycle shelter with corporate identity

In 2016, HP Valves opened a new factory with offices at the High Tech Systems Park in Hengelo. The company wanted to implement the corporate identity everywhere, including its bicycle shelter. Employees store their bicycles safely in the VelopA Pixel bicycle shelter with a fingerprint unlocking system. Perforated logos in the steel walls give the bicycle shelter extra cachet.
HP Valves director Martin Hinsenveld is a satisfied customer. In his own words: “The bicycle shelter turned out exactly as we wanted it. Our employees come to work with expensive bicycles that they want to store safely. Because we don't have a fence around our premises, the bicycle shelter security must be good." That is why HP Valves chose a fingerprint unlocking system.

The Pixel bicycle shelter is 10.25 x 10.5 metres and 2.3 metres high. There is room for 100 bicycles. The HP Valves logo is perforated onto two of the steel walls, and the name and logo of the High Tech Systems Park is perforated onto the third wall. The bicycle shelter can be opened by two adjacent doors so that people never get in one another’s way. A small storage space for hazardous substances has also been created in separate shacks. HP Valves in Hengelo manufactures high-pressure valves and accessories that are used worldwide in power plants. The perforations provide a special effect to the illuminated bicycle shelter in the evening.

A real eye-catcher
Hinsenveld: "The contact with VelopA was good from the beginning. It is a nice company to work with. We wanted a beautiful, functional and high-quality bicycle shelter. It is a real eye-catcher!"

Design bicycle racks

No plain iron bicycle racks, the municipality of Deventer opted for a customised bicycle racks with Deventer logo!

Deventer has a historic city centre with many authentic streets and squares. For years, bicycles blocked the narrow streets and cluttered the view. The municipality thought it was time for a change. But not with ordinary bicycle racks and clamps - with custom-made ones. Studio Groen+Schild was commissioned by the municipality to make a design dossier to specify the design principles for the bicycle parking facilities.

The basic idea was that the bicycle parking spaces would be made of corten steel, in a nice rust colour. Strips on the ground clearly indicate the bicycle parking space and the parking direction. Depending on the location in the city centre and the number of bicycles to be parked, the parking spaces are provided with rust-coloured bicycle stands, racks or clamps. VelopA, had previously carried out such projects for other municipalities, such as Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht, and further developed the plan. A team of advisors perfected a customised solution, in keeping with Deventer's street scene. VelopA worked out customer wishes in a sketch, which, after approval from the municipality of Deventer, was converted into engineering and production drawings (in compliance with the applicable requirements). VelopA also took care of producing and delivering the design.

"The bicycle parking solutions are not a superfluous luxury," says Jan Nakken, urban development advisor for the municipality of Deventer. "The municipality encourages residents to cycle to the city centre. People must be able to park their bicycles properly and safely. But those parked bicycles mustn’t clutter public space or get in the way of the emergency services, literally and figuratively, by blocking narrow streets.''

Two-tier bicycle parking at railway stations

Because an increasing number of travellers is now cycling to and from stations, the demand for good bicycle parking is growing. Tens of thousands of Easylift+ bicycle racks have already been delivered and installed at stations across the Netherlands.

There are currently 370,000 bicycle parking places at railway stations in the Netherlands. ProRail, responsible for the Dutch railway network and storage facilities for bicycles at stations, predicts that around 600,000 bicycle places will be needed within the next ten years.

Given the expected growth in the number of rail passengers, ProRail decided to issue a call for tender for the construction of 100,000 extra parking spaces for bicycles. VelopA won this tender with its two-tier bicycle parking system, the Easylift+. Over the next five years, VelopA will provide 65,000 bicycle parking places for ProRail. Tens of thousands of Easylift+ bicycle racks have already been delivered and installed at stations across the Netherlands. One of the locations is the Nunspeet railway station.

Easylift Premium at Amsterdam Central Station

There are bicycle shelters around Amsterdam Central Station. In 2017, the underground bicycle shelter on the east side was renovated. Previously, there was room for 800 bicycles but after the renovation, this number was doubled to 1800 parking spaces. The station building has monumental status and there are rules to preserve the monumental parts.

The area of the bicycle shelter was increased by several square metres, which allowed for the installation of more Easylift two-tier bicycle racks. Because there was not enough space to install two-tier bicycle racks throughout the entire underground bicycle shelter, Variant bicycle racks were also installed.

Waiting comfortably for the boat

The departure/arrival terminal got a complete makeover, which also required new benches. Reposa benches were installed in the departure/arrival terminal so that those travelling to Texel can wait comfortably for the boat there.

We used Mars Sablé coating for the Reposa benches so that they remain resistant to the salty air of the North Sea.

Playing sports in the neighbourhood

The Helderse Visbuurt has a beautiful new Omnistadium. In Vijzelstraat, residents wanted a real sports cage to be constructed on a small court, where youngsters playing football used to bother the residents with noise disturbance. The bright orange cage was built; an aesthetic and social asset for the neighbourhood. Residents are satisfied and so is the municipality.
There was a one-metre high fence on the court that was used as a football cage. But the flying balls bothered the residents and there was also a lot of noise disturbance. Because the fence didn't work properly, it led to destruction and the neighbourhood became increasingly annoyed. The residents turned to the municipality to request a good play facility. The municipality discussed this with the residents and together they chose the Omnistadium, which has been in use since August 2017.

Football and basketball
The sports cage (12.25 m x 18.49 m) also has hoops for playing basketball. Plastic clamps have been inserted between the panels of the fence to prevent vibration and reduce noise disturbance. Two Chico goals have been installed to make optimal use of the limited space. The Omnistadium was raised on the side of the buildings using a roof arch.

Positive reactions to colour and model

Supervisor Rick van Esch, from the municipality of Den Helder believes that a fully-fledged sports facility has now been constructed on this court. "I am really pleased with the design, VelopA employed a good team of technicians who came up with their own ideas and initiatives for approach. We got a lot of positive reactions about it, also thanks to the colour and model. The Omnistadium is an eye-catching presence."

Want to give your neighbourhood a boost too? Please contact us or read more about the Omnistadium.

Park&Bike in Groningen

In Groningen, P&B parking spaces have been created at several locations outside the city centre. The Municipality of Groningen saw an opportunity to rent out bicycle parking spaces to companies located in the city centre. The municipality hopes this will help to reduce car traffic in the city centre.

The P&R parking spaces are clearly visible, recognisable and personalised for the municipality of Groningen, thanks to the image perforated in the sheet metal of the Pixel bicycle shelter. Inside the bicycle shelters there are Griffin bicycle racks and passengers who do not use the P&B parking facility can park their bikes safely in the TuliP Traverse bicycle racks that are accessible free of charge.

Bicycle parking solutions for UMCG Groningen

A large proportion of the staff, visitors, patients and medical students come to the UMCG hospital by bicycle and they need to be able to park their bikes securely. “The Riksja shelters are almost too popular. They are often completely full!”

The UMCG is one of the largest hospitals in the Netherlands and the largest employer in the northern
region of the Netherlands. In January 2012, the UMCG introduced a bicycle parking policy. The objective is to get people to park their bicycles in the racks provided. After all, the hospital site needs to be kept secure, accessible and tidy. As such,
bicycles should not be parked on pavements and enough bicycle racks should be provided.

The number of bicycle parking spaces has therefore been increased to more than 7000. Particular effort has been made to ensure that the parking facilities look uniform and are convenient for users of bicycles, mopeds and motorcyclists.

The various bicycle parking facilities are spread over the extensive site as much as possible, to take account of the routes taken by the target groups. For patients, there is a bicycle parking area very close to the main
entrance of the hospital, so they can park quickly and do not have to walk far. Employees can leave their bicycles by the side entrance, for instance, in a large underground bicycle parking area with access control at the entrance. Thanks to the dual-level Easylift+ bicycle parking system in this bicycle park, there are now almost twice as many bicycle parking spaces.

“Working with both the account manager Danny Douwes and the project leader during the installation of the bicycle racks, everything went very smoothly”, according to Monique Hillebrand, senior staff member at UMCG facility Management.

Omnistadium in Denmark

Like all other schools in Denmark, the Lagonischool is faced with the task of implementing the new school reform, which, among other things, provides for 45 minutes of body movement during a school day. Much is changing, and that is why particular attention is paid to students learning and well-being; because the Lagonischool has set itself the goal of being part of the group of the best schools in Denmark. Keeping in mind the new school reform, the training facilities were improved and a new Omnistadium was created. The Omnistadium is designed to reduce noise and is therefore the ideal choice for a school site.

Sports field with a shelter

When schools lack sports facilities but prefer having PE classes on school grounds, a multifunctional sports field including a shelter is the perfect solution. The multicourt is suitable for PE classes and children can use it during breaks and playtime to stay active by playing football, basketball, hockey or handball. By giving part of the Omnistadium a roof, teaching staff and students will also be able to use the sports cage and artificial grass pitch when it rains, snows or when there is strong wind. This is ideal because it eliminates the significant expense of renting external gym facilities.

The main aspect of the sports field is the Omnistadium sports cage, with a low-noise design that is unrivalled in the Netherlands. The shape of the Omnistadium is reminiscent of well-known, large-scale stadiums, making athletes feel like they are in an actual sports arena, with the beautifully designed sports cage contributing to the environment’s appeal. The total sports area is divided into three fields using colours, making it possible to play different sports at the same time. This also reaffirms the social importance of sports fields.

If you would like VelopA to assist you with a sports-related query, please contact us of one of our distributors. We will be happy to help you find the right design for your outdoor area.
